Founded in 803 AD

803 St Peter Stiftskeller mentioned for the first time by the scholar Alcuin, a follower of Emperor Charlemagne, thus regarded as the oldest restaurant in Europe

1300

the St Peter Stiftskeller gains notoriety in the annals of literature through poet and composer ‘Monk of Salzburg’

1510

the cellar area is extended – even Faust knew about the quality of the Stiftskeller

1720

conversion of the Stiftskeller – nobility, bourgeoisie & clergy all come to enjoy the hospitality

1760

Michael Haydn lives on the upper floor of the Stiftskeller

1786

acquisition of ‘beer justice’ i.e. the licence to serve beer, prior to that only wine could be served and only by the priests serving their own wines

1903

construction of the Baroque Hall

1992

signing of the first ever lease contract in the history of St Peter Stiftskeller. Leaseholder Claus Haslauer takes on this substantial challenge at the age of just 25 years.

1996

premiere of the famous Mozart Dinner Concert in the historic Baroque Hall, still enjoying huge popularity with daily performances

1999

Veronika Kirchmair-Haslauer takes on the task of rearranging the historic interiors with dedication and a fine eye for detail, giving rooms and salons a lighter and contemporary interpretation

2003

the Stiftskeller celebrates its 1200th anniversary

2008

the kitchen and service areas at St Peter Stiftskeller undergo fundamental reconstruction to provide state of the art facilities and appliances

2010

the St Peter Stiftskeller expands to encompass the St Paul Soulfood Catering. This hugely successful catering business is based on individuality, exclusivity and professional, personal service – thus making every event absolutely unique.
